Letters for Kay Sutherland
27th City of Winnipeg Battalion, Football Champions, 1918
1914. Sent from England as The Right Kind of Woman by the British Women's Emigration Association, Kay Sutherland arrives in Winnipeg. On the brink of the city's decline and threat of war she meets Bertie, a left back for the Brooklands Football Club. Their swift courtship is staged in the parks, carnivals, and theatres of the Gateway to the West. When Bertie enlists in the 27th "City of Winnipeg" Battalion, the illusions of colony quickly fall away. Caught in the crosshairs of empire and duty they will make choices for their survival. Like the young nation of Canada, their beliefs and identities will be forever shaped by war.
